Alternative Medicine and Lifestyle Choices
Having been a consumer of alternative medicine and complementary medicine for most of my life; I know that self-care is no longer a trend but a reality for an ever-growing part of the population. Even those who understand the benefits of what both Western and alternative medicine have to offer know that in either case, one must take responsibility for their health.
Scientific breakthroughs in non-intrusive diagnostic tests are revolutionizing preventative and complementary medicine. Diagnostic tests are taking the guess work out of choosing vitamin supplements. They are ushering in a whole new era of preventative alternative medicine. These are exciting times for consumers and the health and wellness industry.
For most alternative consumer goods and services
It has been a path of self-education and self-treatment. I grew up in a home where my now 89-year-old mother educated herself about health as well as nutrition. In fact; on my book shelf, I have her first edition of Back To Eden (1939) by Jethro Kloss. My mother was part of a pioneering generation of self-care, self-help psychology, and care for your health using natural remedies and vitamins. Pioneers like Edgar Cayce and others that followed discovered ways to diagnose and treat people using natural means.
Applied Kinesiology was one of the first non-invasive diagnostic technology I was exposed to. AK is a technique that uses the muscles as a feedback mechanism. One common way of using Applied Kinesiology is to test the body’s response to vitamin supplements.
Another non-invasive diagnostic tool I discovered as a health consumer was the EAV machine (electro-acupuncture according to Voll). The EAV machine tests the body’s acupuncture meridian system which conducts DC electrical current, or in Chinese alternative medicine, known as chi or energy. A simple probe is used on the hands, feet and teeth, which are the points on the body where the meridians end. The EAV is used to determine the functioning of the body’s meridian system. Practitioners use this machine in a variety of ways to help determine which supplements your body needs.
We have come a long way from self-treating, Applied Kinesiology and tools; such as the EAV machine. Science has given us non-intrusive tests that can now test the body’s biochemical and electrical balance.
A comprehensive look at your body’s overall health
This can be assessed by testing the urine as well as saliva. These two bodily fluids are indicators of cellular health; and the functioning of your filtering system. Saliva is an intracellular fluid; providing a sample of what’s inside the cell; while urine shows what the body is excreting.
To start a job in alternative medicine, I chose to take a peek into online colleges to acquire my education. The initial school I researched was Corinthian Naturopathic College.
Alternative medicine schools offer a certification in Colon Hydrotherapy; as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Naturopathy and a Doctorate of Naturopathy. While their courses seem to be decent; I found several flaws with the school as well as ultimately decided against using their program.
For starters, though they claim to provide a bachelor’s degree to their graduates, it is not regarded as such by the state. Actually, they declare that their program isn’t a great so much for a career as, “…basically for personal health enrichment as well as improvement”. So put simply, in order to access business in doing what you learn to turn away and find another school.
Another reason I didn’t like is their distance learning program
It isn’t done online, it’s done by mail. You have to do all course correspondence by snail mail, wasting valuable time as well as money. This also means that the program is mostly do-it-yourself with limited help and no contact with fellow students.
Another problem I had is that they are alternative and complementary medicine schools. While it is really not a knock against them, religious institutions generally only approach their subjects from one perspective, while secular institutions aren’t afraid to show all sides of a problem.
The most recent advances are in genomic research. DNA assessments are available to determine our genetic predisposition for disease! Simply using a buccal swab (cheek cells) to collect a sample of your DNA right in your own home.
The advances in preventative health care couldn’t have been more timely. Poor diet, stressful lifestyles choices which made me feel panicked, as well as an aging baby boomer generation. They’re challenging the overall health of Americans. Facing an uncertain health care system; people are taking personal responsibility for the health and wellness.
